The following is a letter to the community from James Kurose, Assistant Director, and Erwin Gianchandani, Deputy Assistant Director, of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE).

We are pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has formed a search committee for the next Division Director for its Division of Computing and Communication Foundations (CCF).

As many of you know, Rao Kosaraju, who has served as CCF Division Director since January 2015, will be completing his rotation and returning to his institution, Johns Hopkins University, this coming January.  While at NSF/CISE, Rao has provided truly outstanding leadership of the CCF division, including catalyzing new cross-directorate programs such as Algorithms in the Field (AitF) and Scalable Parallelism in the eXtreme (SPX), new cross-Foundation activities such as Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science (TRIPODS), and new industry engagements including Energy-Efficient Computing:  from Devices to Architectures (E2CDA) with the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and Computer-Assisted Programming for Heterogeneous Architectures (CAPA) with Intel Labs. It’s been absolutely terrific having such a thoughtful, talented, and dedicated leader for CCF!

CCF supports the innovative projects that explore the foundations of computing and communication devices and their usage — enabling advances in computing and communication theory, algorithms for computer and computational sciences, and the architecture and design of hardware and software.  CCF-supported projects also investigate revolutionary computing models and technologies based on emerging scientific ideas and integrate research and education activities to prepare future generations of computer scientists and engineers.

The CCF Division Director has managerial and oversight responsibilities for the division, which comprises a total annual budget of approximately $190 million; helps determine funding requirements, prepares and justifies budget estimates, balances program needs, allocates resources, and oversees the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declines; and represents the division to relevant external groups, including through fostering of partnerships with other NSF divisions/directorates, Federal agencies, scientific organizations and the academic community.
