Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

NSF/CISE Search Committee for Computer and Network Systems (CNS) Division Director Now Closes 6/21

May 30th, 2019 / in Announcements, NSF / by Helen Wright

NSF logoThe following is a previously posted letter to the community from James Kurose, Assistant Director, and Erwin Gianchandani, Deputy Assistant Director, of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) about the open Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS) Division Director position. The position now closes on June 21, 2019.

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has convened a search committee for the next Division Director for its Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS).

As many of you know, Dr. Ken Calvert, who has served as the CNS Division Director since May 2016, will be completing his rotation and returning to his institution, the University of Kentucky, at the end of this calendar year.  While at NSF/CISE, Ken has provided outstanding leadership for CNS, leading efforts to move toward a more flexible organization of the division’s core programs that integrate two separate but increasingly overlapping areas; further CISE’s (and NSF’s) partnerships with other Federal agencies, the private sector, and international funders; revise the CISE Research Infrastructure program (now renamed CISE Community Research Infrastructure) to better support experimental computing research; and launch a CISE-wide pilot effort on Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC).  It’s been so wonderful to have had Ken’s leadership and expertise in CNS over these last several years!

The members of the CNS Division Director Search Committee are:

Mostafa Ammar, Georgia Institute of Technology (chair) (ammar@cc.gatech.edu)

Elizabeth Belding, University of California, Santa Barbara (ebelding@ucsb.edu)

Terry Benzel, University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute (tbenzel@isi.edu)

Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Harvey Mudd College (hadas@cs.hmc.edu)

Morley Mao, University of Michigan (zmao@umich.edu)

Christopher Ramming, VMware, Inc. (chrisramming@vmware.com)

Jack Stankovic, University of Virginia (stankovic@cs.virginia.edu)

Taieb Znati, University of Pittsburgh (znati@pitt.edu)

Manish Parashar, NSF, Liaison to Search Committee (mparasha@nsf.gov)

Please feel free to contact any of the committee members to nominate candidates.  Self-nominations are also invited.

The announcement for the CNS Division Director recruitment can be found on USAJobs.gov here. Formal applications for the position must be submitted via USAJobs.gov by 6/21/2019.

CNS supports research that advances computing and networking technologies and systems, including better abstractions and tools for designing, building, analyzing, and measuring future systems.  The division also invests in computing infrastructure that enables experimental computer science, and in education and workforce development for computing and closely related areas.

The Division Director (DD) has managerial and oversight responsibilities for the division, which comprises a total annual budget of approximately $230 million. The DD helps determine funding requirements, prepares and justifies budget estimates, balances program needs, allocates resources, and oversees the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declinations. The DD also represents the division to relevant external groups, including through fostering partnerships with other NSF divisions/offices/directorates, Federal agencies, scientific organizations, and the academic community.

Thank you in advance for your help with identifying candidates for this important position.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Best,

Jim and Erwin

Erwin Gianchandani, NSF Deputy Assistant Director for CISE
