The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) recently elected its 2021 Fellows. The AAAI Fellows program recognizes individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions — usually over at least a ten-year period — to the field of artificial intelligence.
Two of the newly elected fellows are Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council members!
Odest Chadwicke Jenkins, University of Michigan
- Jenkins was recently interviewed by the New York Times about his thoughts on the Artificial Intelligence field’s failure to make systems that are accurate for everyone. He is one of the authors of the Next Wave Artificial Intelligence: Robust, Explainable, Adaptable, Ethical, and Accountable, a CCC Quadrennial Paper, which describes the history and limitations of today’s AI systems, such as brittleness, weakness against adversarial attacks, and the difficulties of system training. As well as one of the authors of another CCC Quadrennial Paper, called Robotics Enabling the Workforce, which highlights the critical need for research to understand how future robot technologies can complement our workforce to get the best of both human and automated labor. Finally, Jenkins is a member of the CCC Artificial Intelligence (AI) Working Group, which is continuing to work to disseminate the 2019 AI Roadmap to the computing research community.
Holly Yanco, University of Massachusetts, Lowell
- Yanco is also one of the authors of the Robotics Enabling the Workforce CCC Quadrennial Paper. She is a member of the Technology for a Distributed Life task force, which leads CCC activities related to the Internet of Things (IoT), aging in place, robotics, and related topics.
Computing Research Association (CRA) and Computing Research Association Widening Participation (CRA-WP) Board member, Ayanna Howard (Georgia Institute of Technology) was also elected. Howard was recently hired as Dean of the College of Engineering at Ohio State University.
Congratulations to all the 2021 AAAI Fellows!
