Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

AI for Good Global Summit – AI to Prevent Modern Slavery and Child Trafficking Webinar

February 4th, 2021 / in AI, conferences / by Khari Douglas

AI for Good webinar logoThe AI for Good Global Summit, “an all-year digital event, featuring weekly programming across multiple formats, platforms and time-zones,” will hold the AI to Prevent Modern Slavery and Child Trafficking webinar on Wednesday, February 24th 4pm – 5:30 pm CET (10am – 11:30 am EST).

From the webinar webpage: “With Target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals, all UN Member States committed to take “immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.”

Understanding what those “effective measures” might be through application of technology’s most innovative tools is the challenge taken up by Code 8.7. Code 8.7 fosters collaboration between artificial intelligence (AI), computational science and anti-slavery leaders in the fight against forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour. This panel will bring together members of the Code 8.7 Organizing Committee to discuss promising research avenues within AI and Computational Science as well as some specific cases in which application of these technologies are supporting SDG Target 8.7.”

The panel will feature:

  • Alice Eckstein (Programme Manager United Nations University Centre for Policy Research),
  • Nadya Bliss (Executive Director of the Global Security Initiative at Arizona State University and CCC Council Member),
  • Doreen Boyd (Associate Director at the Rights Lab, University of Nottingham),
  • James Goulding (leads analytics streams at the University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab),
  • and Anjali Mazumder (Theme Lead on AI and Justice & Human Rights at the Alan Turing Institute).

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is one of the members of Code 8.7, which aims to create collaborations “between artificial intelligence (AI), computational science and anti-slavery leaders in the fight against forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour.” Other members of Code 8.7 include: United Nations University Centre for Policy Research, the Alan Turing Institute, the Rights Lab at the University of Nottingham, the Global Security Initiative at Arizona State University and AnnieCannons.

The first Code 8.7 conference took place in February 2019 and videos from that event can be found on the conference website. A Catalyzing Computing podcast episode discussing the conference can be found here. The CCC held a visioning workshop with Code 8.7 in March 2020 and a workshop report is in progress.

“Code 8.7 is also opening membership to individuals or organizations who commit to the principles of this project and wish to develop collaborations with other members to apply AI, tech and computational science to the collection of data and identification of effective measures to achieve SDG Target 8.7. Outputs of these collaborations may be featured on the Delta 8.7 knowledge platform to support researchers and policy actors seeking to engage with the evidence base in their work.”
