The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has appointed Former Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council member Kevin Fu (University of Michigan and the Archimedes Center) as the first ever Acting Director of Medical Device Cybersecurity. Fu’s role also includes a one-year appointment as Program Director of Cybersecurity in the Digital Health Center of Excellence (DHCoE), a division launched in September 2020 within CDRH.
“The Digital Health Center of Excellence (DHCoE) is part of the planned evolution of the Digital Health Program in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) and will align and coordinate digital health work across the FDA. It marks the beginning of a comprehensive approach to digital health technology, setting the stage for advancing and realizing the potential of digital health.”
Fu has been working in this space for years, including while he was on the CCC Council by leading the 2018 Embedded Security Workshop, co-authoring the 2017 Safety, Security, and Privacy Threats Posed by Accelerating Trends in the Internet of Things white paper, the 2017 Safety and Security for Intelligent Infrastructure white paper, and 2015 Systems Computing Challenges in the Internet of Things white paper.
His appointment shows the growing importance of computing in the medical space especially as we slowly transition to life after a global pandemic. Read more about Fu’s role in news from Michigan CSE, The Michigan Engineer, and The National Law Review.
