Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Apply for the 9th Heidelberg Laureate Forum

November 18th, 2021 / in Announcements / by Khari Douglas

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) recently announced the start of the application period to attend the 9th annual HLF, which will take place September 18–23, 2022 in Heidelberg, Germany.

From the call for applications:

Young researchers in computer science and mathematics from all over the world can apply for one of the 200 coveted spots to participate in the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), an annual networking event. The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the great opportunity to interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. Traditionally, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany. If meeting in person is not safely possible, a digital alternative will be developed that creates spaces for effective, sustainable interaction.

The application period for the 9th HLF runs from November 11, 2021, until February 11, 2022. Young researchers at all phases of their careers (Undergraduate/Pre-Master, Graduate PhD or Postdoc) are encouraged to complete and submit their applications by February 11 (midnight at the dateline) via the following link: http://application.heidelberg-laureate-forum.org

CCC Senior Program Associate Khari Douglas virtually attended the 8th HLF this September. Among the highlights were a presentation from 2020 ACM Prize in Computing winner Scott Aaronson, who discussed the recent advancements in quantum computing and the impact that “quantum supremacy” could have on the future of computing (read a recap here); and an interactive panel discussing how to successfully pitch your stories to science publishers (read a recap of that panel here).

Khari has also interviewed HLF laureates for the CCC’s Catalyzing Computing podcast, including an episode with Vint Cerf, who discussed net neutrality and the challenges of developing interplanetary Internet (listen here); and one with Shwetak Patel, who talked about his entrepreneurship and the future of smart health systems (listen here). Read more about past HLFs on the CCC blog here.
