Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.


New Members Elected to the National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) just elected 106 new members and 18 international members. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”
Among the new members are Fu Cheng (Columbia University) and Stefan Savage (University of California, San Diego), who have previously collaborated with the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) and the Computing Research Association (CRA).
 

Shih-Fu Chang

Chang, Shih-Fu

Dean and Morris A. and Alma Schapiro Professor, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University, New York City. Elected for contributions to multimedia search and retrieval. Chang was a PI for the CCC’s Postdoc Best Practice Program. This program awarded grants to institutions and consortia of institutions to implement best practices for strengthening the postdoc experience in computer science and computing-related fields.

 
 

Stefan Savage

Stefan Savage

Stefan Savage

Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of California, San Diego. Elected for contributions to the security, privacy, and reliability of network systems, transforming approaches to problems in these areas. Savage was on the Steering Committee for the newest CIFellows program launched in 2020 and has engaged in other various CCC initiatives.
