Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

The CCC Responds to OSTP’s Request for Information on National Priorities for AI

In May 2023, the Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) published a request for information on to inform the Biden-Harris Administration development of a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. The strategy will chart a path for the United States to harness the benefits and mitigate the risks of AI and build on the actions that the Federal Government have already taken to responsibly advance the development and use of AI. Public comments will go towards helping to update U.S. national priorities and future actions on AI. You can read the Computing Community Consortium’s (CCC) response here.
The CCC’s response focused on promoting academic research’s role in the research ecosystem, as well as, emphasizing the importance of higher education in the development of AI and other technologies. Academic research provides a space for curiosity-driven, long-term basic research that will be fundamental in the advancement of AI.

This response is coupled with a number of other requests for information and requests for comment that have been a part of the government’s effort to promote the development of AI in a safe and efficient manner. In their request OSTP stated they will also draw on public input from ongoing and recent RFIs listed below. The CCC has responded to a number of them.

  • OSTP’s RFI to the Update of the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan (CCC’s Response);
  • The National Telecommunication and Information Administration’s Request for Comment on AI Accountability Policy (CCC’s Response);
  • OSTP’s and the National Science Foundation’s RFI on Implementing Initial Findings and Recommendations of the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force (CCC’s Response);
  • OSTP’s RFI on Automated Worker Surveillance and Management; and
  • OSTP’s RFI on Public and Private Sector Uses of Biometric Technologies (CCC’s Response).
