Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

CCC Weekly Computing News: NSF, NEH and International Agencies Fund Climate Initiative

In another installment of CCC’s Weekly Computing News, we are sharing an exciting funding opportunity for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

NSF, NEH and partner funding agencies announce the winners of the Canada-led 2023 International Joint Initiative for Research on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation competition

On June 3, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), along with several international funding agencies, announced the recipients of the International Joint Initiative for Research on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.

This initiative, managed by Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), awarded nearly $26 million to fund 11 collaborative research projects. NSF contributed approximately $6 million, NEH half a million, and international partners over $19 million. These projects aim to address critical climate change challenges highlighted in the UN IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report through innovative and transformative research.

The awarded projects will focus on developing adaptation and mitigation strategies for vulnerable communities, particularly in low and middle-income countries and Indigenous groups, who are disproportionately affected by climate change. These projects will tackle issues such as predicting and mitigating floods and droughts, ensuring food-water-energy security, and enhancing community resilience. These initiatives will not only advance scientific knowledge but also foster international cooperation and create educational opportunities, aiming to build a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Research teams must comprise experts from at least two of the participating countries: the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, and the U.K. Beyond these core partners, collaborations will also involve researchers from a wide range of additional countries, reflecting a global effort to address climate challenges comprehensively and inclusively. The outcomes of these projects are expected to inform policy, strengthen global resilience, and empower communities worldwide to combat the impacts of climate change effectively.
