The Smart and Secure Cities and Communities Challenge (GCTC/SC3) Expo is July 10-12, 2019 in Washington, DC. GCTC/SC3 will bring together hundreds of municipal governments and technology innovators around the world who have established teams to address shared issues faced by cities and communities. Registration is free but required!

Smart and Safe: Risk Reduction in Tomorrow’s Cities Panel and Reception
Hosted by the EastWest Institute, in partnership with Microsoft and Unisys, Room 150B, 5:00-6:30pm, Thursday, July 11 (open to public, pre-registration recommended)
This panel will bring together representatives from the private sector, non-profit and city leadership to discuss the challenges cities face when deploying technology and smart solutions in urban environments. Speakers will share views on recommendations and best practices to manage the risks and reap the full potential of Smart Cities across four main areas: cybersecurity, public safety, privacy and data protection, and collaboration in governance. The discussion will be based around a 2019 report from the EastWest Institute, Microsoft and Unisys: Smart and Safe: Risk Reduction in Tomorrow’s Cities.

5G Session
Room 150A, 12:30-1:30pm, Thursday, July 11 (open to public, no separate registration required)
The 5G coverage and transition between 5G and LTE will be discussed. It is believed that coverage is going to be spotty initially, with installations focused on the most high-density areas of a city. 5G won’t come in one fell swoop, so all the applications that cities are planning need to be able to function – maybe less completely – on LTE until coverage is more complete. Additionally, for the high-bandwidth applications that are counting on mm-wave, there is going to be a lot of work in determining how/where to place the sites to get coverage because of the propagation properties of mm-waves. Transition between indoor and outdoor is going to be challenging for the same reasons.
Inclusivity & Privacy Session
Hosted by National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), Room 151A, 12:50-1:50pm, Thursday, July 11 (open to public, no separate registration required)
Inclusivity and privacy issues are major topics that should be addressed to implement a true smart city. The panel will bring together experts from the private sector, civil society and city leadership to discuss challenges of inclusivity and privacy for smart cities.

Call for Papers for ACM Smart Cities and Communities Symposium at Tech Jam in September
The fourth annual Global City Teams Challenge Tech Jam will be held in Portland Oregon between Tuesday, September 10th – Thursday September 12th, 2019. This event will bring together forward-looking municipalities, research institutions, federal agencies, leading private sector companies, interested in preparing their infrastructure for the latest smart city technologies to provide better, more equitable services. In collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Emerging Interest Group (EIG) on Smart Cities and Communities (SCC) we will be hosting a Technical Papers Symposium. This Symposium will provide a leading venue for the presentation of the highest-quality original research, groundbreaking ideas, and compelling insights on future trends in Smart City Technology and Deployment. Accepted papers will be presented at the symposium and published in the ACM Digital Library as part of the event proceedings. Abstracts are due by June 24 and full papers are due by July 22.
