The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.


OSTP Announces Public Events in November to Engage the American Public in National Policymaking about AI and Equity

The White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) is launching a series of listening sessions and events to involve the American public in the development of a Bill of Rights for an Automated Society. With the growing influence of data-driven technologies, the series is part of a national endeavor to ensure that emerging socio-technical systems are safe and just.

In addition to the RFI on current or planned uses of AI-enabled biometric technologies, OSTP will hold two public listening sessions and six public discussion forums seeking input from key stakeholders.

Listening Sessions on Public and Private Sector Uses of AI-Enabled Biometrics

  • Listening Session One: Thursday, November  18th, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. ET. Register here.

Public Events on the Bill of Rights for an Automated Society 

These events will dive into insights and analysis on risks, harms, benefits and policy opportunities of AI and other automated technologies.

  • Consumer Rights and Protections: Co-hosted by OSTP and The German Marshall Fund of the United States. This event will explore opportunities and challenges for individual consumer products , advanced platforms and services, “Internet of Things” (IOT) devices, and smart city products and services.   • The Criminal Justice System: Co-hosted by OSTP and the Electronic Privacy Information Center. This event will discuss current and emergent uses of technology in the criminal justice system and consider how they advance or undermine public safety, justice, and democratic values.   • Equal Opportunities and Civil Justice: Co-hosted by OSTP and Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. This forum will explore current and emerging uses of technology that impact equity of opportunity in employment, education, housing and financial well-being.   • Artificial Intelligence and Democratic Values: Co-hosted by OSTP and Mozilla Foundation. This event will examine challenges and opportunities in the design of technology that help support a democratic vision for AI. Thursday, November 18th, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. ET. Register here.
  • Social Welfare and Development: Co-hosted by OSTP and New America. This event will explore current and emerging uses of technology to implement or improve social welfare systems, social development programs, and other systems that can impact life chances.
