Did you know that LGBTQ+ youth face a higher risk of exposure to potentially harmful interactions on social media than their heterosexual peers? Exposure to such interactions has been linked to negative impacts on their mental health. Other “at-risk” users include individuals from marginalized communities such as survivors of abuse, people with disabilities, or those from low-income backgrounds. To address disproportionate digital harm to these individuals, CCC will be hosting a workshop on, “Support At-Risk Users Through Responsible Computing,” from December 9-10 in Washington, DC.
Technology has the power to connect, empower, and create opportunities, but for certain individuals and communities, it can also pose significant risks. Whether it’s online harassment, exploitation, or privacy violations, some groups are more vulnerable to harm in online spaces due to their identities, experiences, or social positions.
Recognizing these challenges, the workshop seeks a diverse group of researchers from industry, academia, and civil society to take on one of the most pressing issues of our time: how to protect at-risk users from the growing dangers of technology-facilitated abuse and discrimination?
The goal? To collaboratively inform and design best practices, ethical frameworks and research methods when working with these at-risk groups.
Keep an eye out for recommendations emerging from workshop discussions after the event!
