In November 2023, CCC hosted a workshop on “The Future of Research on Social Technologies” in Washington, DC. The event, also supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, addressed the past, present and future of social technologies research. The workshop brought together over 50 information and computer scientists, social scientists, communication and journalism scholars, and policy experts. Today, April 1, 2024, the CCC submitted a response to the Department of Energy (DOE)’s Request for Information (RFI) Related to Responsibilities on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. In the solicitation, DOE sought advice on their plan to carry out some of the responsibilities outlined for them in the October Executive order (E.O.), “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence”. In 2023, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), an affiliated professional society member of CRA, commissioned a task force to craft a strategic vision for arising challenges in the future of computational science. Earlier this month, the task force released its report, titled The Future of Computational Science. The NSF Workshop on Sustainable Computing for Sustainability has just released a virtual registration link to attend the workshop remotely on April 16-17, 2024. This workshop, which the CCC’s own Chandra Krintz is on the steering committee for, seeks to identify open challenges in how to harness computing to tackle sustainability problems, and in ensuring that computing accounts for sustainability in its own development and operation.   Due to space limitations, the workshop will follow a hybrid format with approximately 100 in-person attendees at the National Science Foundation’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA, and remote participation feasible through a zoom webinar. Hager was selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to serve as the Assistant Director (AD) of the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) starting June 3, 2024. Dr. Hager had been a long standing member of CCC: he was a CCC Council Member from 2010-2017, CCC Vice Chair from 2013-2014, and CCC Chair from 2014-2016.
