The National Science Foundation (NSF) is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Alan T. Waterman Award. This annual award recognizes an outstanding young researcher in any field of science or engineering supported by the National Science Foundation. The candidate should have demonstrated both individual achievements in their field, as well as originality, innovation, and impact on their field. The award was established by Congress in August 1975 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the NSF and to honor its first Director. In addition to a medal, the awardee receives a grant of $1,000,000 over five years for scientific research at the institution of the recipient’s choice. In order to be eligible for the award a […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

October 5th, 2017 / in Announcements, awards / by Khari DouglasComputing Community Consortium Symposium
October 2nd, 2017 / in Announcements / by Khari DouglasSince its inception, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) has hosted dozens of visioning workshops to envision, discuss, and catalyze the future of computing and its role in addressing societal needs. The Computing Research: Addressing National Priorities and Societal Needs Symposium will draw these topics into a program designed to illuminate current and future trends in computing and the potential for computing to address national challenges. The two days are organized around four main themes: Intelligent Infrastructure for our Cities and Communities: Intelligent infrastructure is already transforming our nation’s cities and communities, but the technological revolution is just now beginning. This session will highlight some of the major advances taking place now, while at […]
New NSF Program Solicitation on Cyberlearning for Work at the Human-Technology Frontier
September 28th, 2017 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News / by Khari DouglasThe National Science Foundation (NSF) recently released a new program solicitation on Cyberlearning for Work at the Human-Technology Frontier. The goal of the program is to support research of learning technologies for both educational and work settings. Proposals should utilize current knowledge about how people learn and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence or virtual reality in order to facilitate lifelong learning. This cross-cutting program is connected with the NSF Directorates for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE); Education & Human Resources (EHR); Engineering (ENG); and Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). A portion of the program description reads as follows. This program solicits projects that are exploratory and experimental in nature. These […]
New NSF Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science (TRIPODS) Awards
September 27th, 2017 / in Announcements, NSF, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightThe National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced $17.7 million in funding for 12 Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science (TRIPODS) projects, which will bring together the statistics, mathematics and theoretical computer science communities to develop the foundations of data science. Technological advances and unprecedented access to computing infrastructure have resulted in an explosion of data from different sources. The availability of these data — their volume and variety, and the speed at which they are collected — is transforming research in all fields of science and engineering. TRIPODS awards will enable data-driven discovery through major investments in state-of-the-art mathematical and statistical tools, better data mining and machine learning approaches, […]
Blue Sky Ideas Conference Track
September 26th, 2017 / in Announcements, CCC, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightAre you helping organize a conference in the near future? Consider having a Blue Sky Ideas Conference Track! The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) sponsors an initiative to bring special “Blue Sky Ideas” tracks to leading computer science research conferences. The goal of this initiative is to help conferences reach out beyond the usual research papers that present completed work and to seek out papers that present ideas and visions that can stimulate the research community to pursue new directions. Conferences may request CCC sponsorship of such tracks along with a CCC grant that provides prize money for the top 3 papers (first prize $1000, second prize $750, and third prize $500), to be awarded […]
