Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Calling for Proposals: Envisioning Frontiers of Computing Research

September 20th, 2011 / in big science, CCC, research horizons, resources / by Erwin Gianchandani

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) — a standing committee of CRA that seeks to catalyze and empower the computing research community to pursue audacious, high-impact research — has issued a call for proposals for workshop programs that will define visions and agendas for exciting frontiers of computing research. From the solicitation: Successful [workshop] programs will ultimately articulate and mobilize community support for a research vision(s), with the intention of generating support from funding agencies. Proposals are encouraged across the full spectrum of work in the creation and application of information technologies to important challenges, from the theoretical to the practical. Awards can range from $10,000 to $200,000. (Proposers are encouraged […]

SSTD 2011 Vision & Challenge Track Winners Announced

August 27th, 2011 / in awards, CCC, conference reports, research horizons / by Erwin Gianchandani

The following is a special contribution to this blog from Shashi Shekhar and Mohamed Mokbel, faculty in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Minnesota. The pair organized the 12th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases in Minneapolis, MN, this week. We were delighted to host a successful Vision and Challenge Track at the 12th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases this past Wednesday through Friday. SSTD 2011 was the twelfth event in a series of biennial symposia that discuss research in spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal data management. This year’s SSTD program exhibited diversity across organizations (e.g., academic, industry, and government), career stage (e.g., graduate students, early-stage, mid-stage, […]

100,000 Views… And Counting

June 14th, 2011 / in CCC / by Erwin Gianchandani

A quick break from the usual sorts of posts in this space: The Computing Community Consortium launched this blog three years ago as a way to promote discussion — about research directions, funding programs, etc. — throughout the computing research community. Today — 234 posts later — the blog has been seen at least 100,000 times. Thanks to everyone who’s visited this website over the past several years! In the very first post on this blog, Peter Lee and Andrew McCallum described the objective — derived from the goals of the CCC: Brainstorming, discussing and driving “longer range, audacious research challenges” is the job of the entire community, and the CCC is […]

CCC Robotics Connects with Industry and Government

June 10th, 2008 / in CCC, Research News, robotics, workshop reports / by Andrew McCallum

The CCC-sponsored robotics initiative kicks off next week with the first of four workshops covering the impact, applications and emerging technologies of robotics. Robotics research and development have already transformed our lives in many ways: they perform nearly all the welding and painting on the cars we drive; they enable telerobotic surgery resulting in more reliable outcomes and faster recovery times; they perform millions of scientific experiments and observations in chemistry, biology and medical labs.  Increasingly robotics is also providing improved control and functionality in people’s daily lives: some new model cars can park themselves or provide advanced distance-keeping cruise control and collision warnings; millions of autonomous vacuum cleaners are […]
