The American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) annual meeting brought together a community of leading scientists, educators, policymakers and journalists in February. Among those individuals were CCC council member Matthew Turk and former council member Suresh Venkatasubramanian. Last week, the CCC responded to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s Request for Information on Dual Use Foundation Artificial Intelligence Models with Widely Available Model Weights. The CCC’s own Daniel Lopresti (CCC Chair and Lehigh University) and David Danks (CCC Executive Committee and University of California, San Diego) helped author this response along with several other members of the computing community. Today, April 1, 2024, the CCC submitted a response to the Department of Energy (DOE)’s Request for Information (RFI) Related to Responsibilities on Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. In the solicitation, DOE sought advice on their plan to carry out some of the responsibilities outlined for them in the October Executive order (E.O.), “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence”. Hager was selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to serve as the Assistant Director (AD) of the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) starting June 3, 2024. Dr. Hager had been a long standing member of CCC: he was a CCC Council Member from 2010-2017, CCC Vice Chair from 2013-2014, and CCC Chair from 2014-2016. The Community Driven Approaches to Research in Technology & Society visioning workshop was held in the Spring of 2023, bringing together a diverse group of 53 civil society representatives, activists, non-profit leaders, and computing researchers together. The workshop was sponsored by CCC and the MacArthur Foundation.
