Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

A General-Audience Talk: How Computing May Change Our World

September 22nd, 2020 / in Announcements, CCC, CRA, research horizons, Research News / by Helen Wright

While the Computing Research Association’s Computing Community Consortium (CCC) works to catalyze the computing community for the public good, we have rarely prepared talks suitable for the non-computer-scientist public. Fortunately, CCC Chair Emeritus Mark D. Hill of the University of Wisconsin-Madison recently prepared a well-received general-audience talk for Participatory Learning And Teaching Organization (PLATO), a senior organization that arranges informative lectures, classes, and field trips, all virtual now. Prof. Hill’s one-hour talk has the immodest title “How Computing May Change Our World” (YouTube Video & Slide PDF). It discusses that, while computing has already changed how we communicate, work, and play, more big impacts are afoot. Prof. Hill gives insight […]

CRA Committee on Industry/Academia Interactions Releases Report

August 13th, 2020 / in Announcements, CCC, CRA, research horizons, Research News / by Helen Wright

The following is a blog from the Computing Research Association’s Bulletin, about the release of a new CRA committee report that was informed by a number of Computing Community Consortium (CCC) activities, such as the 2015 The Future of Computing Research: Industry-Academia Collaboration report, the CCC Industry Working Group and resulting Evolving Academia/Industry Relations in Computing Research white paper. Recent trends such as increasing industry demands for technical talent from academia, as well as changes in the academic environment with increased industry interactions have prompted the need for a fresh look at the relationships between academia and industry. In late 2019, a CRA ad hoc committee on Industry/Academia Interactions was created to study these trends and determine how CRA can […]

AnitaB.org, The National Center for Women & Technology (NCWIT) and the STARS Computing Corps (STARS) are conducting a survey to understand the impact of the global pandemics on the conditions of work and educational environments related to in computing and technical degree programs and professions. Through the Investigating Compounding Impacts of Racism & COVID-19 on Learning & Employment in Computing & Technology (CIRCLE-CT) Study we are gathering responses from individuals across the computing and technical ecosystem including K-12 teachers; post-secondary program leaders, educators and students; and individuals in the computing and technical workforce and tech startup community. We invite you to participate in the 10-minute survey by visiting https://anitaborginstitute.sjc1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6fYZUZBl53lTMWN  . For more information […]

Announcing CRA Workshop Series on Departmental Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) Plans

July 3rd, 2020 / in Announcements, CRA / by Helen Wright

The following is a guest blog from the BPC Plan Workshop Steering Committee.  We are pleased to announce the Workshop Series on Writing Departmental Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) Plans. As part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering’s (CISE) commitment to broaden participation in computing (BPC), a number of NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) programs now require PIs to have a meaningful broadening participation in computing (BPC) plan at time of award. Computing departments are encouraged to develop departmental BPC plans that faculty can use in their proposals submitted to these NSF programs. To support departments developing […]

Request for Community Feedback on BPCnet.org

June 23rd, 2020 / in Announcements, CRA, pipeline, research horizons, Research News / by Helen Wright

The following is a guest blog from the BPCnet.org Steering Committee.  To the computing community, With this particularly challenging academic year coming to an end, and the upcoming NSF CISE program submissions, it is a good time to update everyone on the NSF CISE Pilot Program for Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) Plans. All Medium and Large CISE Core Programs, Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) project proposals require an approved BPC Plan by the time of award. CRA and NCWIT have led an effort to develop the BPCnet.org portal as a resource for the community to assist in developing Departmental BPC Plans and Individual BPC Plans. New Resources on BPCnet.org: […]
