Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Webinar

July 13th, 2015 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News / by Helen Wright

The Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) program is for research and teaching faculty in the first two years of their appointments. In 2014-15, the first year of the program, there were 76 awards under this program. Two of the projects that were funded last year are highlighted below. The interaction between computer processors and software is governed by an Instruction Set Architecture (ISA). The ISA is large and complex, too large for a person to understand and reason about all the interactions between different parts completely. [My] research is about detecting security vulnerabilities that exist in the ISA. The hypothesis of this research is that it […]

NSF’s New Public Access Plan

June 24th, 2015 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News / by Helen Wright

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has a new public access plan called Today’s Data, Tomorrow’s Discoveries that was released in March to increase access to the results of research funded by NSF. Public access is intended to accelerate the dissemination of fundamental research results that will advance the frontiers of knowledge and help ensure the nation’s future prosperity. NSF’s plan is grounded in the realization that clear and open communication of research results is central to fulfilling NSF’s primary mission of promoting the progress of science. NSF will implement its public access requirements in stages. In the first implementation, the following products of NSF-funded research are in scope: Articles in peer-reviewed journals […]

New ‘toolkit’ clarifies NSF OLPA resources; helps agency tell NSF-funded stories better

June 11th, 2015 / in Announcements, NSF / by Helen Wright

The following blog post is from the National Science Foundation Office of Legislative and Public Affairs on improving science communication.  A new interactive resource available through NSF’s website will help NSF-funded principal investigators and their institution public information officers understand better the process for creating communications tools, such as videos and feature stories, so that NSF more effectively communicates the science it funds. This user-friendly resource, which is essentially a decision tree that shows examples of all of NSF’s Office of Legislative and Public Affairs (OLPA) capabilities, is located with NSF’s communications resources along with a text-only version. (Click on “Science Communication Toolkit for Principal Investigators.”)  In addition to showcasing all […]
