In March 2012, the Obama Administration announced the “Big Data Research and Development Initiative.” The goal is to help solve some of the Nation’s most pressing challenges by improving our ability to extract knowledge from large and complex collections of digital data. The Administration encouraged multiple stakeholders including federal agencies, private industry, academia, state and local government, non-profits, and foundations, to develop and participate in Big Data innovation projects across the country. National Science Foundation is exploring the establishment of a national network of “Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs.” These Hubs will help to sustain new regional and grassroots partnerships around Big Data. Potential roles for Hubs include, but are […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Accelerating the Big Data Innovation Ecosystem
September 4th, 2014 / in big science, NSF / by Helen WrightBack to School – Exploring Computer Science: from the classrooms of L.A. schools to a nationwide effort
September 2nd, 2014 / in NSF, Research News, resources / by Ann DrobnisThe following is a guest blog post from Gera Jochum, Communications Specialist for the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF). A new video produced by the National Science Foundation showcases an innovative computer science curriculum that’s been a huge success in Los Angeles public schools and is now spreading across the nation. The video highlights the work of Jane Margolis, an educator and researcher at UCLA, who has dedicated her career to democratizing computer science education and addressing under-representation in the field. Her work inspires students from diverse backgrounds to study computer science and use their knowledge to help society. With support from […]
Cloud Computing Testbeds to be created for the Research Community
August 21st, 2014 / in NSF, Research News / by Ann DrobnisOn August 20, 2014, the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) announced two new $10 million projects for cloud computing testbeds. These new testbeds will enable academic researchers to develop and experiment with novel cloud architectures and pursue new, architecturally-enabled applications of cloud computing. In the spring of 2013, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) issued a call for White Papers on mid-scale infrastructure. An overview of the white papers was presented to the CISE Advisory Committee and used to inform their discussions. As a result of their recommendations, the Mid-Scale Infrastructure (NSFCloud) program was formed. These two projects, named “Chameleon” and “CloudLab” are part of Phase I of […]
New Multi-Year Initiative from NSF on the Professional Formation of Engineers is Launched
August 18th, 2014 / in NSF / by Ann DrobnisThe Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF) has launched a new multi-year initiative to create and support an “innovative and inclusive” profession for the 21st century, called the Professional Formation of Engineers. As part of the FY15 initiative, the program is sponsoring the Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) solicitation, in conjunction with the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate and the Education and Human Resources (EHR) Directorate. From the solicitation: Specific activities supported by the RED solicitation may include, but are not limited to: Establishing convergent technical and professional threads that must be woven across the four years, especially in core technical courses of the middle two years, […]
