The Computing Research Association (CRA), in consultation with the National Science Foundation (NSF), has appointed six new members to the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council:  Randal Burns, Johns Hopkins University David Jensen, University of Massachusetts Amherst  Rada Mihalcea, University of Michigan Raj Rajaraman, Northeastern University Matthew Turk, Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago Pam Wisniewski,  Vanderbilt University Beginning July 1, the new members will each serve three-year terms. Last week, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), announced their election results. Among the new leadership was Computing Community Consortium Council Member, Elisa Bertino. She will begin her new two-year term as ACM Vice President on July 1. Bertino is a Professor of Computer Science and research director at CERIAS at Purdue University, and a Fellow of both ACM and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Pete Beckman will give a talk “Artificial Intelligence and the Digital Continuum: The Future of Linking Scientific Instruments and Edge Computing to Advanced Computation” as a part of the National Science Foundation CISE Distinguished Lecture Series. Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) have developed robotic buoys located 20 miles off of the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, which are used to detect nearby whales in near real-time. These buoys listen to whale songs using underwater microphones, and compile these songs into spectrograms, or “pitch tracks” which resemble notes on sheet music. The spectrograms are then sent to on-shore servers, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used to compare these recordings to existing libraries of whale songs, to identify the species of whale.
