The following blog was written by Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Vice-Chair Liz Bradley from University of Colorado Boulder and CCC Chair Mark D. Hill from the University of Wisconsin Madison. Times in Artificial Intelligence are or should be changing. See Bob Dylan’s 1964 lyrics below. Last week the New York Times published an article titled “A.I. Researchers See Danger of Haves and Have-Nots.” Modern AI research, which demands enormous computational resources, large data sets, and significant human expertise, is becoming increasingly difficult for anyone outside the large tech companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook. This includes university labs—which, as the article points out, have traditionally been a wellspring of […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

AI Research: Times They Are A-Changin’ (or They Should Be)
October 2nd, 2019 / in AI, Announcements, policy, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightA CERN for Climate Change and the National Security Implications of Cybersecurity
September 26th, 2019 / in Announcements, CCC, pipeline, research horizons, Research News, resources / by Helen WrightThe following post is from Khari Douglas, who is currently at the 2019 Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Heidelberg Germany. Every year at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) a hot topic, or theme, related to mathematics and computer science is chosen to be addressed by a panel of experts. At this year’s HLF the hot topic sessions, which took place on Tuesday, September 24th, focused on climate change and what we can do to tackle the problem. The sessions addressed questions like: “How can we predict the next century’s climate if we can hardly predict this weekend’s weather? Is the latest flooding or heat wave due to climate change, or not? Why […]
Margaret Martonosi Selected as the New AD for CISE!
September 23rd, 2019 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News / by Helen WrightThe Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is delighted National Science Foundation (NSF) Director France Córdova has selected Margaret Martonosi as the next head of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate at NSF! Martonosi will assume the role of Assistant Director (AD), CISE on February 1, 2020. “On behalf of myself, the CCC, and the computing research community, we are thrilled with the selection of Margaret Martonosi as CISE AD,” said Mark D. Hill, CCC Chair. “I have known Margaret for three decades and admired her creative work ranging from hardware power efficiency to a deep, formal understanding of memory consistency models. For the CCC, I am particularly impressed […]
CS for Social Good Award Announcement!
September 18th, 2019 / in Announcements, CCC, Research News / by Helen WrightEarlier this summer, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) announced a joint white paper competition with Schmidt Futures on the future of “CS for Social Good.” Schmidt Futures, founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt, is a philanthropic initiative that bets early on people who will make our world better. The goal of the joint white paper competition was to harness computer science (CS) to address societal challenges. CCC put together a review committee consisting of CCC Council members, who read all submitted proposals and made decisions on the final papers. The Best Overall Paper was awarded to Connie Moon Sehat from Hacks/Hackers – Credibility Coalition and Ellen Zegura from Georgia Tech […]
A 20-Year Community Roadmap for AI Research in the US: Slide Deck
September 12th, 2019 / in AI, Announcements, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightRecently, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) released the completed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roadmap, titled A 20-Year Community Roadmap for AI Research in the US! An HTML version is available here. Slides summarizing the roadmap are now available here. We encourage you to use these when sharing the community vision. This roadmap is the result of a year long effort by the CCC and over 100 members of the research community, led by Yolanda Gil (University of Southern California and President of AAAI) and Bart Selman (Cornell University and President Elect of AAAI). Comments on a draft report of this roadmap were solicited in the Spring of 2019 and incorporated in the final report. If you would like […]
