The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. Many speculated that the high-pitched sounds were some high-frequency sonic weapon. When Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council member, Kevin Fu from the University of Michigan, looked at the spectral plot of the clip he saw some unusual ripples. Fu worked with his collaborator, Wenyuan Xu, a professor at Zhejiang University, in Hangzhou, China, and her Ph.D. student Chen Yan, and through a series of simulations, saw that an effect known as intermodulation distortion could have produced the sound.
