Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.


Microsoft Research Faculty Summit will be Live Streamed!

The 15th Annual Microsoft Research Faculty Summit is taking place July 14-15, 2014 in Redmond, WA.  There is an exciting program planned with topics including computing devices and the Internet of Things, hardware-software co-design, data visualization, crowdsourcing applications, machine learning, and the algorithms that underlie emerging fields, such as computational neuroscience.  If you’re not going to be in Redmond, you can still be a part of the action, as the event will be live streamed for all to see. Last year’s Research Faculty Summit was a huge success, you can read about in this blog post by Ed Lazowska.  This year looks to be just as promising!

AAAS S&T Policy Fellowship Information Sessions

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will have two live chat sessions on July 10 and July 24 about the AAAS Science & Technology (S&T) Policy Fellowship. The AAAS S&T Policy Fellowships are in seven policy areas and aim to provide diverse opportunities for accomplished scientists and engineers to participate in and contribute to the federal policymaking process. Fellows learn firsthand about the intersection of science and policy. Current and alumni fellows and fellowship staff will answer questions about the fellows’ science policy initiatives on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies, the career impact these fellowships can have, and the 2015-16 application process. CISE Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) Program Webinar

The National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) invites you to attend a webinar to learn more about its recently released solicitation, Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) (see our previous blog post). The webinar is designed to describe the goals and focus of the CRII solicitation, help investigators understand its scope, and answer any questions potential PIs may have. The webinar will be held from 3pm to 4pm EDT on Monday, July 28, 2014. Questions about the solicitation can be submitted in advance or during the webinar to crii@nsf.gov. Please register by 11:59pm EDT on Thursday, July 24, 2014.      

CCC and CRA Add New Members

Today, July 1, new talents were added to the ranks of both the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council and the Computing Research Association (CRA) Board of Directors.  The CCC welcomes five new members to its Council and CRA welcomes five new members to it’s Board. The Next Generation Driverless Car

We all have seen pictures of a driverless car, loaded with quite a bit of equipment on top of the car to help in the autonomous nature of the car.  On June 24, researchers from Carnegie Mellon University brought their next generation driverless car to Washington, DC at the request of Congressman Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania.   This next generation car doesn’t look much like it’s predecessor, BOSS, who won the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge.  Rather, it looks more like any “ordinary” car, as its top-of-the-line radar, cameras, sensors and other technologies are built into the body of the vehicle. Computing a Cure for HIV

On June 26, the National Science Foundation (NSF) released a Discovery article titled Computing a Cure for HIV, written by Aaron Dubrow, Public Affairs Specialist in the Office of Legislative & Public Affairs.  The article provides an overview of the disease and how it continues to afflict millions of people worldwide.
