Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Humans, Machines and the Future of Work Conference Call for Posters

August 30th, 2016 / in Announcements / by Khari Douglas

The De Lange Conference X has released a call for posters for inclusion in their conference, Humans, Machines and the Future of Work. The conference, organized by Moshe Vardi and co-sponsored by The Computing Research Association, will bring together members of computing, economics, and social sciences on December 5th-6th at Rice University to discuss the possible impact of advances in computing on the future of work. The call for posters is below: The De Lange Conference X seeks poster submissions, which describe recently completed work or work in progress, on the subject of Humans, Machines, and The Future of Work. Presenting a poster is a great way to get feedback on work that has not yet been published. Poster […]

AI for Social Good (AISOC) Spring 2017 Symposium Call for Papers

August 3rd, 2016 / in Announcements, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

The AAAI 2017 Spring Symposium on AI for Social Good (AISOC) will be March 27-29, 2017 at Stanford University.  A rise in real-world applications of AI has stimulated significant interest from the public, media, and policy makers, including the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Along with this increasing attention has come media-fueled concerns about purported negative consequences of AI, which often overlooks the societal benefits that AI is delivering and can deliver in the near future. This symposium will focus on the promise of AI across multiple sectors of society. The organizers are especially interested in addressing societal challenges, which have not yet received significant attention by the AI community […]

Symposium on Accelerating Science: A Grand Challenge for AI

July 28th, 2016 / in CCC, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

The following is a guest blog by Vasant G Honavar, a Computing Community Consortium (CCC) council member and a Pennsylvania State University professor. The emergence of “big data” offers unprecedented opportunities for not only accelerating scientific advances but also enabling new modes of discovery. Some have gone so far as to suggest that “big data” makes the scientific method that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting of systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses, obsolete. Nothing could be farther from truth.   The reality is that, in many disciplines, the emergence of big data exacerbates the gap between our ability to acquire, store, […]

White House OSTP Request for Information on Artificial Intelligence

June 28th, 2016 / in Announcements, CCC, policy, research horizons, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) just released a Request For Information (RFI) on Artificial Intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies offer great promise for creating new and innovative products, growing the economy, and advancing national priorities in areas such as education, mental and physical health, addressing climate change, and more. Like any transformative technology, however, AI carries risks and presents complex policy challenges along a number of different fronts. The Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is interested in developing a view of AI across all sectors for the purpose of recommending directions for research and determining challenges and opportunities in this field. The views of the […]

Artificial Intelligence for Social Good

June 15th, 2016 / in CCC, policy, research horizons, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

Imagine diagnosing a hospital patient with septicemia 25 hours before the onset of sepsis shock, dispatching the right police officer to de-escalate a situation, or increasing agricultural productivity based on weather knowledge where few weather stations exist. These scenarios are not simply dreams, but thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) research are actually happening in the world today and are having a positive impact on societies across the globe. Interest in artificial intelligence has been rapidly increasing in recent years, often with a focus on the flashy robot or computer that can speak responses, but the practical applications have a major societal impact and are often overlooked. AI has been successfully applied to societal […]

Artificial Intelligence for Social Good

June 1st, 2016 / in Announcements, CCC, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

The Computing Community Consortium (CCC), White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), are co-sponsoring a public workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Social Good on June 7th, 2016 in Washington, DC. There has been a dramatically increasing interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recent years. AI has been successfully applied to societal challenge problems and it has a great potential to provide tremendous social good in the future. In this workshop, we will discuss the successful deployments and the potential use of AI in various topics that are essential for social good, including but not limited to urban computing, health, environmental sustainability, and public […]
