The South Big Data Hub links talented students with tech startups through a DataStart program, which provides real-world experiences for students while helping entrepreneurial companies. Graduate students from six universities in the southern U.S. will spend the summer working on data challenges important to the success of new and growing technology companies thanks to a new program called the Southern Startup Internship Program in Data Science (DataStart). Through DataStart, interns will have the opportunity to address a wide range of data-related business problems in a professional setting, including spotting trends in the diversity of people included in clinical trials, developing methods for using sensor data to detect loads on wind turbines, […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

The Science of Data-Driven Storytelling Workshop
June 14th, 2016 / in Announcements / by Khari DouglasContributions to this post were provided by Meredith M. Lee, Executive Director of the West Data Hub from UC Berkeley. On Thursday June 16th, the West Big Data Innovation Hub and DataScience, Inc. will co-host a workshop titled “The Science of Data-Driven Storytelling” in Culver City, California. The West Big Data Hub is one of four National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs that the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is partnering with to sponsor a program on Industry-Academic Collaboration. The CCC asked each Hub to create a plan aligned with their region’s needs and opportunities to foster partnerships, benefitting early career academic researchers as well as the […]
Administration Issues Strategic Plan for Big Data Research and Development
May 23rd, 2016 / in Announcements, policy, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightBig Data has been a major theme of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) over the years. In addition to having a Convergence of Data and Computing Task Force, the CCC held two events for Big Data that coalesced the research community and the usage community in 2008. A number of CCC’s white papers have also focused on the topic, including Challenges and Opportunities with Big Data (2012), Opportunities and Challenges for Next Generation Computing (2015), Accelerating Science: A Computing Research Agenda (2016), and a series of white papers on Big Data and National Priorities (2010) that were instrumental in the creation of the Big Data Initiative. The following is a White House Blog Post by Keith Marzullo, the Director of the Networking […]
Store your (Big) Data in the Code of Life?
May 19th, 2016 / in CCC, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightThe following is a special contribution to this blog by CCC Executive Council Member Mark D. Hill of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Full disclosure: He is working with one of the authors—Luis Ceze—and Tom Wenisch on visioning via Architecture 2030 at ISCA 2016. The invention of writing enabled us to reliably transmit information into the future. Stone tablets, papyrus, velum, and paper can be read centuries if not millennia later. But how much of the digital information that we created over the last 75 years will be readable much later? How much is even readable now? Wouldn’t it be valuable if we could record digital information in a medium that […]
