The Computing Research Association (CRA) and Computing Community Consortium (CCC) are pleased to announce a new Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) Program for 2020. This program recognizes the significant disruption to the academic job search caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic uncertainty and aims to provide a career-enhancing bridge experience for recent and soon-to-be PhD graduates in computing. The goal of the program is to create career growth opportunities that support maintaining the computing research pipeline. Computing research is defined as any area included under the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computing and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate. This effort takes inspiration from CRA/CCC’s NSF-funded Computing Innovation Fellows Programs […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

May 4th, 2020 / in Announcements, CCC, NSF, research horizons, Research News, resources / by Helen WrightIn March 2020, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced the first ten recipients of the NSF Program on Fairness in Artificial Intelligence in Collaboration with Amazon (FAI). From the solicitation: NSF and Amazon are partnering to jointly support computational research focused on fairness in AI, with the goal of contributing to trustworthy AI systems that are readily accepted and deployed to tackle grand challenges facing society. Specific topics of interest include, but are not limited to transparency, explainability, accountability, potential adverse biases and effects, mitigation strategies, algorithmic advances, fairness objectives, validation of fairness, and advances in broad accessibility and utility. Funded projects will enable broadened acceptance of AI systems, helping […]
NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Enabling Quantum Computing Platform Access for National Science Foundation Researchers with Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Microsoft Quantum
April 27th, 2020 / in Announcements, NSF, Research News, resources / by Helen WrightThe following is a letter to the community from Margaret Martonosi Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) and Anne Kinney Assistant Director of the NSF Directorate Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS). Dear Colleagues: The field of quantum computing has seen substantial progress in recent years, with the development of next-generation quantum processors in the 50- to 100-qubit range. Realizing the promise of such processors requires significant capacity-building to prepare the next generation of quantum discoverers. In light of the quantum-computing developments in the private sector as well as the opportunity for further innovation in the academic setting, the National Science Foundation and […]
NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Research Experiences for Undergraduates Supplemental Funding in Computer and Information Science and Engineering
April 24th, 2020 / in Announcements, COVID, NSF, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightThe following is a letter to the community from Margaret Martonosi Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE). April 24, 2020 Dear Colleagues, The National Science Foundation (NSF) is aware of the disruption to undergraduate employment and education opportunities caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. We understand that many internships are being canceled, leaving students without expected opportunities this Summer. The Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) previously issued a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL; NSF 20-016) expressing interest in funding supplements to active CISE awards for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), consistent with NSF’s REU Sites and Supplements solicitation (NSF […]
CISE, SBE and the Evolving and Expanding Role of Ethics at NSF and Beyond
April 16th, 2020 / in Announcements, NSF / by Helen WrightContributions to this post were provided by Fred Kronz, SBE/NSF. The responsible and ethical conduct of research involves not only a responsibility to generate and disseminate knowledge with rigor and integrity, but also a responsibility to: Conduct peer review with the highest ethical standards; Diligently protect proprietary information and intellectual property from inappropriate disclosure; and Treat students and colleagues fairly and with respect. Recently, at the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council meeting, Fred Kronz, a Program Director in the Division of Social & Economic Sciences in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), presented on CISE, SBE and the Evolving and Expanding […]
NSF Announces New Expeditions in Computing Awards
March 25th, 2020 / in Announcements, NSF, research horizons, Research News / by Helen WrightThe National Science Foundation‘s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) established the Expeditions in Computing (Expeditions) program more than a decade ago “to build on past successes and provide the CISE research and education community with the opportunity to pursue ambitious, fundamental research agendas that promise to define the future of computing and information.” Funded at levels up to $15 million for seven years, “Expeditions projects represent some of the largest single investments currently made by the CISE directorate. Together with the Science and Technology Centers and the National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes that CISE supports, Expeditions projects form the centerpiece of the directorate’s center-scale award portfolio.” “For over 10 […]
