Google announced the finalists for its annual international science fair. There are projects from all over the world covering a wide variety of fields, including computer science. All the projects are by scientists under 18 years old. The projects will be exhibited and judged at an event on September 21 at the Google Headquarters. You can browse through all 20 finalists at the Google Science Fair website, but here are two that stood out. The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

They are honored guests at the fifth White House Science Fair and recipients of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. Included at the Science Fair will be a TV personality, Cierra Ramirez who plays Mariana Foster in the ABC Family series, The Fosters. On the show, Cierra’s character is learning how to code and will attend a hackathon this season. She is working hard to change stereotypes and be a role model for young girls.
