This program recognizes the significant disruption to the academic job search caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic uncertainty and aims to provide a career-enhancing bridge experience for recent and soon-to-be PhD graduates in computing. Last week the Computing Research Association (CRA) and Computing Community Consortium (CCC) announced the new Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) Program for 2020. This program recognizes the significant disruption to the academic job search caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and associated economic uncertainty and aims to provide a career-enhancing bridge experience for recent and soon-to-be PhD graduates in computing.  Awards will support an individual for 2 years as a postdoctoral fellow (“CIFellow”) at a host institution of their choosing. Four years ago the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) launched the Postdoc Best Practice Program (Postdoc BP), designed to develop, implement and institutionalize the implementation of best practices for supporting postdocs. The Postdoc BP program was initiated due to a 157% rise[1] in computing postdocs between 2005 and 2010, which demanded attention from the computing community. A Steering Committee, led by Anita Jones (University of Virginia), was assembled to choose a set of institutions or consortia to design and investigate potential best practices for these postdocs. Last week we published a blog post highlighting the MIT Technology Review’s 2015 list of 35 innovators under the age of 35. This list included Travis Deyle who was a member of the Computing Community Consortium’s (CCC) CI Fellow program in 2011 and currently works at Google X Life Sciences where he has been part of a team that developed glucose-sensing and autofocusing contact lenses. Travis earned a PhD in healthcare robotics from Georgia Tech in 2011, where he built some of the first mobile robots capable operating in real homes.
