In November, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) announced the third offering of the CCC Leadership in Science Policy Institute (LiSPI), intended to educate computing researchers on how science policy in the U.S. is formulated and how our government works. All information from nominators and nominees must be in by midnight, December 22, 2014. Discuss this opportunity with your colleagues, identify those you believe would be interested in participating, and submit nominations today! See the original blog post to learn more.
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

December 15th, 2014 / in Announcements, CCC, CRA, policy / by Helen WrightWorking towards a Healthy Pipeline: Encouraging CS Undergraduates from U.S. Institutions to Consider Graduate School and Careers in Research
August 26th, 2014 / in Announcements, CRA, CS education, Research News / by Ann DrobnisThe following is a special contribution to this blog by CCC Council Member Ran Libeskind-Hadas and CRA Board Member Susanne Hambrusch, Co-Chairs of CRA-E. The CRA Education Committee’s (CRA-E) mission is to address society’s need for a continuous supply of talented and well-educated computing researchers. The committee’s efforts include both research on the state of the “domestic student pipeline” and developing resources to maintain its health. The fraction of Ph.D. students who are domestic (U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents) has been in decline over the last several decades from around 70% in the mid-1980’s to under 50% in recent years. A 2013 CRA-E report shows that a small number of departments have accounted […]
Evaluation Report Comparing Industry vs. Academic Postdocs in Computing is Available
August 8th, 2014 / in CRA, policy, workshop reports / by Ann DrobnisThe following is a special contribution to this blog by Jane Stout, Director of CRA’s Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP). The CRA’s Center for Evaluating the Research Pipeline (CERP) has published a report on the topic of Industry versus Academic Postdocs in computing. The report uses both survey and focus group data to assess the experiences of individuals who have completed a computing related postdoc in either an industry or academic setting. Findings suggest that Industry Postdocs feel better able to manage professional responsibilities, have better relationships with their advisor and feel more welcomed in the work environment compared to Academic Postdocs. Through comparing and contrasting postdocs’ experiences in the two settings, CERP’s report sheds […]
New Look for CRA Unveiled at the 2014 CRA Conference at Snowbird
July 29th, 2014 / in Announcements, CCC, CRA / by Shar SteedWe are proud to announce the launch of a new brand for CRA and its committees. As the impact of CRA’s activities are becoming more widely recognized and valued across our industry, we decided to develop a new brand identity that reinforces and amplifies our mission, objectives and programs. Our new brand is part of our larger effort to create a comprehensive communications strategy for CRA and its many activities. After updating our mission statement, last fall we began developing a brand that positions CRA as dynamic and collaborative, while preserving the unique identities of CRA’s distinct committees. The new CRA symbol is designed to represent great minds coming together. […]
CCC at the 2014 CRA Conference at Snowbird
July 29th, 2014 / in Announcements, CRA, Research News / by Ann DrobnisThe biennial CRA Conference at Snowbird took place last week for Chairs, Department Heads, and Lab Directors from across North America. Nearly 300 people gathered to participate in sessions ranging in topics from issues in government surveillance using the Internet to creating a diverse Computer Science research community. The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) led a variety of sessions throughout the conference. Excitement was high for the programs being put on by the CCC: Computing Visions 2025: The Visions 2025 initiative was created to inspire the computing community to envision future trends and opportunities in computing research. Where is the computing field going over the next 10-15 years? What are potential […]
