The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 106 new members and 23 foreign members. Several computing researchers are among those elected this year. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) has appointed Former Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council member Kevin Fu (University of Michigan and the Archimedes Center) as the first ever Acting Director of Medical Device Cybersecurity. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) will host a one-day workshop on CAREER Proposal Writing on April 5, 2021. This workshop will be held virtually. The goal of this workshop is to introduce junior CAREER-eligible faculty to the NSF CAREER program and help them to prepare their CAREER proposals to target CISE programs. Attendees will have the opportunity to improve their skills in proposal writing, as well as to interact with NSF program directors from different CISE divisions (CCF, CNS, IIS and OAC) and recent NSF CAREER awardees. Geoffrey Hinton, University of Toronto, will present “How to Represent Part-Whole Hierarchies in a Neural Net,” part of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) Distinguished Lecture Series on February 11th, 2021, from 11:00AM to 12:300PM ET. Geoffrey Hinton received his Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from Edinburgh in 1978.  After five years as a faculty member at Carnegie-Mellon, he became a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and moved to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto where he is now an emeritus professor.
