Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.


The Coolest Jobs with the Federal Government

FedScoop published a list of the thirteen coolest jobs in the federal government. Some computing-based highlights include: Buddy Bland, the Project Manager for the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, Energy Department. Bland is responsible for running Titan supercomputer and for evaluating proposals for groups that want to use the supercomputer. Greg Chirikijian, a professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University currently on a rotation at the National Science Foundation (NSF) where he works as the Program Director of the National Robotics Initiative. NIH “Frontiers in Science” Webinar- Data-level Metrics

The Office of the Associate Director for Data Science (ADDS) at the National Institute of Health (NIH) has launched a new “Frontiers in Science” webinar series.  This series brings ideas at the forefront of data science to the NIH and biomedical science communities. Lectures, webinars, and workshops in this series are intended to inspire biomedical data science innovation and exploration. New NIH Grant Opportunity related to CCC Aging in Place Workshop

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a new grant called Collaborative Aging (in Place) Research Using Technology (CART) (U2C), which is a result of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Aging in Place Workshop called the Trans-NIH/Interagency Workshop on the Use and Development of Assistive Technology for the Aging Population and People with Chronic Disabilities that was held last year and produced this workshop report. White House National Strategic Computing Initiative Workshop

The White House just wrapped up their National Strategic Computing Initiative Workshop (NSCI). The purpose of the workshop was to maximize the impact and inform long term planning for the NSCI, by creating new partnerships between academia and industry. CCC Releases Whitepaper in Support of White House Grand Challenge

On October 20, as part of the rollout of the National Strategic Computing Initiative, the White House announced their nanotechnology-inspired grand challenge to develop transformational computing capabilities by combining innovations in multiple scientific disciplines. Create a new type of computer that can proactively interpret and learn from data, solve unfamiliar problems using what it has learned, and operate with the energy efficiency of the human brain. 50 Emerging Global Entrepreneurs to Watch

The Kairos Society, a San Francisco-based international organization that supports the development of entrepreneurs has published its fourth annual list of Kairos 50; a list of 50 emerging global startups, with at least one founder under the age of 25. The list of 50 finalists was chosen from 550 nominations and one winner could get $50,000 from Ev Williams, one of Twitter’s co-founders.
