Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

The BPCnet Resource Portal is an initiative by the Computing Research Association with support from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). CISE is committed to broadening participation in computing (BPC). The following was reposted from the BPCnet Bulletin.  BPCnet.org will be hosting its last working session for this year on Thursday, November 18th, 2021, from 3:00 PM- 5:00 PM ET. Best Practices on Using the Cloud for Computing Research

In July 2021, the Computing Research Association’s (CRA) newly formed Industry Committee (CRA-I) launched a series of 75-minute virtual roundtables to initiate discussion on the various areas of interest of CRA-I’s computing research industry partners. The mission of CRA-I is to convene industry partners on computing research topics of mutual interest and connect those partners with CRA’s academic and government constituents for mutual benefit and improved societal outcomes.   In September 2021, CRA-I held its second roundtable focused on Best Practices on using the Cloud for Computing Research. Upcoming NSF CISE Proposal Deadlines: Small Businesses

Proposals for Phase I and Phase II of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering’s (CISE) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program are due December 2nd, 2021. The NSF SBIR/STTR programs focus on transitioning scientific research with commercial potential or societal benefits out of the lab and onto the market. Third National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Task Force Meeting and CCC Response to the NAIRR Implementation Plan

The National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Resource (NAIRR) Task Force convened its third virtual public meeting to further develop a vision and implementation plan for the NAIRR. Computing Community Consortium (CCC) Council member Ian Foster (Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago), was invited to speak about the recently published A National Discovery Cloud: Preparing the US for Global Competitiveness in the New Era of 21st Century Digital Transformation white paper.  In addition, 84 responses from industry, academia, and government stakeholders were recently released regarding the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the National Science Foundation request for information to develop an implementation roadmap for the NAIRR. Dr. Fei-Fei Li, of Stanford University, is presenting a lecture titled “From Seeing to Doing: Understanding and Interacting with the Real World” as a part of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) Distinguished Lecture Series. Li’s lecture will be on November 4th, 2021 from 12-1:30pm EDT. Dr. Fei-Fei Li is the inaugural Sequoia Professor in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University where she leads Stanford’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute as the Co-Director and served as the Director of the AI Lab from 2013 to 2018. The Decade of Digital Inclusion

Significant contributions to this post were provided by CCC Senior Program Associate, Khari Douglas.  The Marconi Society, a nonprofit chaired by Vint Cerf and dedicated to bridging the digital divide, held a virtual symposium on Friday, October 22nd, to celebrate the newest Marconi Fellow Andrea Goldsmith.  Friday’s symposium was really a call to action for the computing, and specifically networking, community. The three keynote speakers Doreen Bogdan-Martin (International Telecommunications Union), Jessica Rosenworcel (Federal Communications Commission), and Andrea Goldsmith (Princeton University) all made the case for the urgent, pressing need for expanding access to connectivity.  In her keynote, Bogdan-Martin stated that 3.7 billion people still have no online connectivity, which is […]
