The National Academies (NASEM) recognized the need for computing researchers in academia, industry, and government to consider the ethical and societal impacts of their work. Thus, the NASEM Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) formed a study committee which consisted of researchers with expertise across many areas of computer science and engineering, information science, computing technology development, social sciences, philosophy, and law, to work on a consensus study: Responsible Computing Research: Ethics and Governance of Computing Research and its Applications. The result of the study is a National Academies report published late last year: Fostering Responsible Computing Research: Foundations and Practices. Today, the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is releasing a […]
Computing Community Consortium Blog
The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

CCC Council Member Nominations Open
December 13th, 2022 / in Announcements, CCC / by Haley GriffinThe Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is charged with enabling the pursuit of innovative, high-impact computing research that aligns with pressing national and global challenges. Established in 2006 through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Computing Research Association (CRA), the CCC provides a voice for the national computing research community, facilitating the development of a bold, multi-themed vision for computing research and communicating that vision to a wide range of stakeholders. To fulfill its mission, the CCC seeks visionary leaders — people with great ideas, sound judgment, and the willingness to work collaboratively to see things through to completion. The Council is composed of 23 […]
Call for White Papers: Mid-cycle Robotics Roadmap Update
November 28th, 2022 / in Announcements, call for papers, CCC, CCC-led white papers, robotics / by Maddy HunterThrough support from the Computing Community Consortium (CCC), the US National Robotics Roadmap was first created thirteen years ago by a group of 120 people from industry and academia. It has since been used by government agencies, universities and companies as a reference and call to action from the robotics community. The first roadmap was published in 2009, then revised in 2013, 2016, and 2020. Our objective is to develop a short mid-cycle update, identifying gaps that are not being addressed in current research, in funding opportunities, at companies, and in the government, which need to be addressed sooner than the next full roadmap update. To meet this objective, we […]
Building Resilience to Climate Driven Extreme Events with Computing Innovations: A Convergence Accelerator Workshop
November 15th, 2022 / in CCC, research horizons / by Maddy HunterThe Computing Community Consortium just held a two-part workshop, “Building Resilience to Climate Driven Extreme Events with Computing Innovations”. The workshops were sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s new Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnership (TIP). TIP has a major initiative “Convergence Accelerator” that funds programs seeking to solve societal challenges through convergence research and innovation. The goal is to encourage interdisciplinary work, “merging ideas, approaches and technologies from a wide and diverse range of sectors and expertise.” The first workshop in the series was held in-person in Denver, Colorado on October 27-28th, 2022. The goal was to frame the research focus for impact areas (application domains), computing research building […]
