Computing Community Consortium Blog

The goal of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) is to catalyze the computing research community to debate longer range, more audacious research challenges; to build consensus around research visions; to evolve the most promising visions toward clearly defined initiatives; and to work with the funding organizations to move challenges and visions toward funding initiatives. The purpose of this blog is to provide a more immediate, online mechanism for dissemination of visioning concepts and community discussion/debate about them.

Best Practices on Using the Cloud for Computing Research Report Released

July 6th, 2022 / in CCC, CRA-I / by Maddy Hunter

Written by Helen Wright and originally posted on the CRA Bulletin Cloud computing has emerged as critical infrastructure for most enterprises worldwide and has become essential for computing research. It has introduced a revolutionary model in which computing resources can be used to store, manage, process, and share data thereby enabling novel workloads and efficiencies of scale. This is in contrast to the traditional model of enterprises relying entirely on acquiring and maintaining in-house local servers and personal computers.  The Computing Research Association‘s newest committee, Computing Research Association-Industry (CRA-Industry), held its first workshop organized by Vivek Sarkar (Georgia Tech) and Fatma Özcan (Google) on Best Practices on Using the Cloud […]

Best Practices on Using the Cloud for Computing Research

November 3rd, 2021 / in Announcements, CCC, CRA, CRA-I, NSF / by Helen Wright

In July 2021, the Computing Research Association’s (CRA) newly formed Industry Committee (CRA-I) launched a series of 75-minute virtual roundtables to initiate discussion on the various areas of interest of CRA-I’s computing research industry partners. The mission of CRA-I is to convene industry partners on computing research topics of mutual interest and connect those partners with CRA’s academic and government constituents for mutual benefit and improved societal outcomes.   In September 2021, CRA-I held its second roundtable focused on Best Practices on using the Cloud for Computing Research. The purpose of this roundtable was to discuss best practices and the resulting synergistic opportunities across industry, academia, and government. See a video […]

Cloud Access for NSF CISE Research

February 23rd, 2021 / in Announcements, NSF, policy, research horizons, Research News, robotics / by Helen Wright

An increasing number of National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) solicitations, including the CISE Core Programs (for which SMALL Projects do not have a submission deadline), are eligible for cloud access via the CloudBank portal to the AWS, Azure, GCP, and IBM clouds. These clouds offer enormous capacity and rich software stacks. Another plus: access through CloudBank is not subject to indirect cost.
